FORT WAYNE, INDIANA, UNITED STATES, September 25, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- In conjunction with over 450 local summits across the nation and the national Summit in Washington DC, Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology convened the 2018 Biden Cancer Summit on Friday, September 21, 2018, at the Magee-O’Connor Auditorium on the campus of Indiana Tech. Also participating in the event were Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and Visiting Nurse.

The Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology Biden Cancer Summit discussed ways in which cancer research and care saves lives, builds stronger communities and reaches families in moments of critical clinical and emotional need.

Topics at the Summit included:
• Navigating the cancer journey beyond the disease
• Managing difficult conversations
• Preventing cancer through technology, education, and access
• Understanding the oncology research and development pipeline; and survivorship and the path ahead

The Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology Biden Cancer Community Summit provided the opportunity to learn from the perspectives of patients, caregivers, family members, physicians, nurses, patient navigators, and other care providers. Insights into the realities of living with cancer and the ripple effects a diagnosis can have upon families and communities were featured. Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology is the longest running oncology practice in Northeast Indiana with more than 40 years of excellence in cancer treatments.

“Cancer affects us all,” noted Lakshmi Aggarwal, M.D., a physician with Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology. “The impact that a diagnosis can have on an individual, a family, a neighborhood or a community can be devastating. Our goal is to bring new treatments and available community resources into a sharper focus.”

Fort Wayne Medical Oncology and Hematology hosts a local chapter of the Community Oncology Alliance Patient Advocacy Network (CPAN). Its advocacy leader, Lisa J. Poiry RN, OCN, hosts community outreach and educational events like the Summit, which are open to the community. CPAN is a non-cancer-type specific national network representing all members of the cancer community. The organization brings attention to the impact of Medicare legislative policies on cancer patients, specifically the issues affecting access to local and affordable care.
